Vantage Opens Facultative Reinsurance Business Under Lisa Pickard
Vantage has launched a facultative reinsurance business led by Lisa Pickard, who will set its underwriting approach and build its team and broker relationships.

Vantage Group Holdings is adding facultative reinsurance to its business, with Lisa Pickard as president. The Bermuda-based re/insurer says she will shape the new division’s underwriting approach, risk appetite, staffing and relationships with brokers and clients. The launch expands Vantage’s specialty insurance and reinsurance operations after its June 2026 acquisition by Howard Hughes Holdings Inc.

For Vantage, the immediate work is to turn the new line into an operating business: recruit a team, decide how it will assess and select risks, and establish relationships with brokers and clients. The company has named a leader with experience in property facultative underwriting and business development, but has not provided details about the line’s planned capacity, target classes or expected start of underwriting.
Pickard’s remit spans underwriting and growth
Pickard will report directly to Vantage Chief Executive Officer Greg Hendrick. Her responsibilities include setting the division’s strategic direction and risk appetite, overseeing recruitment, and building broker and client relationships. Those tasks connect the new unit’s business goals with the practical choices that shape a reinsurance portfolio: which submissions to pursue, how to assess each risk and how to assemble a team able to underwrite it.

Facultative reinsurance generally covers an individual risk or a defined portion of one, with the reinsurer assessing that exposure separately. That differs from arrangements covering a portfolio of risks under agreed terms. For a new facultative operation, underwriting discipline and the ability to evaluate individual submissions are central to defining the business. Vantage has not said which property risks it intends to consider or how it will set limits, pricing or other terms.
The company’s announcement places team building and underwriting design at the center of Pickard’s assignment. Recruiting specialists and setting a consistent approach will help determine what the division can offer brokers and clients as it develops. The company has not disclosed a timetable for those steps, nor named other executives joining the unit.

Experience in property facultative underwriting
Pickard began her career at Gen Re and later held senior roles at Arch Re Facultative. At Arch Re, she led underwriting teams, helped shape portfolio strategy and developed underwriting teams. That background gives her experience in both evaluating property facultative risks and building the organizational capabilities behind a portfolio.
She later became Arch Re’s first chief strategy officer, serving on its executive leadership committee and working on growth and corporate strategy. Most recently, she founded Atlas Gray, an advisory firm focused on underwriting strategy, portfolio construction, operating models and leadership development for insurance organizations.

That mix of underwriting, management and advisory work is relevant to a business that is still being established. Pickard’s role covers the choices that define how a facultative operation behaves in the market, as well as the work of assembling people and relationships to carry out those choices. Vantage has not outlined a specific volume or growth target for the division.
A new line in Vantage’s expansion
Vantage describes the launch as part of its effort to scale specialty insurance and reinsurance lines following the June 2026 acquisition by Howard Hughes Holdings Inc. The announcement does not detail how the facultative unit will fit with Vantage’s existing products, or whether the company plans to expand into particular territories or risk categories.
Executive Chairman Marc Grandisson said Pickard brings underwriting leadership and strategic experience, and pointed to her record of building teams and scaling disciplined portfolios. His comments frame the appointment around the capabilities Vantage wants as it establishes the new line.
For brokers and potential clients, the next useful details will be the risks the team is prepared to consider, the capacity it can provide and the terms on which it will write business. Those details have not yet been announced. For now, Vantage has identified the leader and the main elements of her remit; the division’s eventual market role will become clearer as the team and underwriting approach take shape.
